Ole Helmik Risa in Iowa from 1902.  (Brother of ML).

Ole, b. 26.11.1881, d. 1967. In USA he married Venke Olene Jakobsdtr. Hodnefjell from

Mosterøy, b. 1883, d. 1960. They had no children.

They bought a farm (ab. 300 acres) at Radcliffe, where they also are buried. Johan A. Hodnefield (1881 – 1956), the brother of Olene is buried next to them.

There have been lots of people from Hodnefjell going to USA. There they changed their names to Hodnefield. Jon Hodnefjell came to USA in 1872, and was a farmer in Radcliffe in Iowa.

In 1962 Ole gave the farm to the local church and moved to his brother Lasse in Clarkfield MN, who had lost his wife many years ago. Thelma was looking after both. Later the church sold the farm on the open marked. On our visit in 2013 we could not even find the church, some miles north of Radcliffe. Local people said it was tear down because of lack of people. It was only big corn field in that area now.

Olene did not dared to travel back to Norway because of homesickness. And Ole did not travel alone.

Amerikabrevet:

Ole left Stavanger on boat to USA, 03.04.1902, only 21 years of age. He traveled to Radcliffe to meet his brother ML who had traveled 5 years earlier. His big brother Kornelius, 25 year of age (my grandfather), followed him to Stavanger. On the boat back to teacher work in Suldal, he wrote a poem saying farewell, se below.  And they never met again:

Farvel til Ole

Farvel, farvel min kjære bror,

som ud må dra fra far og mor.

Til fremmed land du mål har sat,

Gud give vi fik sees att.

Aa tungt der er at skilles her

for dem som har hinanden kjær,

men håbet om at ses igjen

det lindrer hjertets sørgestreng.

Dog taarer rinder lige godt,
